Belize has long been recognized as a World-class Fishing Destination, with the second longest Barrier Reef in the world, offshore Atolls, hundreds of Coral and Mangrove Islands, and endless miles of Lagoons, Estuaries and Rivers. And all teeming with a wide variety of Great Gamefish.
Unlike the overcrowded areas to the North (San Pedro/Ambergris Caye, Belize city, etc) there is little fishing pressure here at the southern end of the Barrier Reef. It is RARE to see another boat fishing! And we have miles of pristine (virgin) Flats, plus the Reefs, Coastal Lagoons and Rivers to test the skills of the most fly Ffsherman.
On the flats, trophy Bonefish are most abundant from September through early December, We practice "catch and release" fishing as much as possible. Even so, during the course of fishing and handling, some fish will be killed. All species of fish are valuable sources of protein here in Belize. Therefore it is our policy that all fish retained or killed will become the property of Spiritwind Reef Resort, and will be used and/or freely distributed as food for the needy in our community.
Our pristine grass flats are thick with shoals of bonefish. And you will soon see that these fish are not nhy! It's not unusual for them to chase each other, competing for your fly. Because most of them have never seen a fly, even "not so well" presented flies are eaten readily. They have even been known to strike top water! If you are looking for Bonefish, you’ve come to the right place.
