World Record Tarpons
Fly fishing for tarpon is one of the most thrilling and exciting angling experiences any fisherman could ever hope for. Poling across skinny water, casting to the daisy chain, bowing to the leaping silver king...these are words and phrases that the angler associates with the heart thumping adrenaline rush of chasing tarpon on the fly.
The flats off of Homosassa offer the serious fly fisher the best opportunity to land a world record Tarpon. Billy Pate was the first, landing a 188lb beast on a 16lb tippet. Jim Holland Jr. on May 11, 2001 boated a 202lb 8oz monster on 20 lb tippet. On May 13, 2003 Tom Evans caught the current world record, a 190.6lb Tarpon also on a 16lb tippet. A new world record was set May 10, 2010 by Tom Evans, his second in the past seven years, 194.1 lbs on 12 lb tippet. Will you be the next World Record Holder? If so, make sure you bring a minimum 12 wt. rod, 300yds of #30 backing on a reel that won't burn up during the heat of the battle. The battle, that on average, lasts an hour and a half. |
